Elliot Page’s “Umbrella Academy” Character Will Come Out as Trans in Season 3Elliot Page’s “Umbrella Academy” Character Will Come Out as Trans in Season 3

Elliot Page shared some major news about his character in the upcoming third season of “The Umbrella Academy” on March 29. Between the release of the second season of the show and filming of the third season, Page came out as transgender, and the minds behind “Umbrella Academy” incorporated the news into the show for Page’s character.

“Meet Viktor Hargreeves,” Page wrote on Instagram with a still from “Umbrella Academy” featuring Viktor and his sister, Allison Hargreeves (Emmy Raver-Lampman), sitting at the bar in a diner. Netflix confirmed to The A.V. Club that in season three of the show, Viktor will come out as transgender, but it didn’t share any details on how the change will be written into the show.

On June 1, writer Thomas Page McBee opened up to Esquire about how he and and “Umbrella Academy” showrunner Steve Blackman incorporated this plot line into season three of the show. According to McBee, Blackman was “passionate” about including Page’s transition in the show, but when he made his announcement, they were set to begin production in two weeks, and scripts were already locked in. They had a serious time crunch to deal with.

“Because Elliot was returning to the screen in an established role and with a fully fleshed-out character arc that intersected with every aspect of the show, his story required that his transness exist as a texture, not a defining character trait,” McBee said. The other issue was that season three starts immediately after the end of season two: “His becoming would need to happen within the first episodes, and without the hand-holding usually provided for cisgender audiences.”

Ultimately, however, this led to a richer storyline. “In this story, being trans is a context, a coming into focus, a sharpening of perspective that will only deepen the connection millions of viewers already have to Viktor and his family,” McBee said.

Season three will also introduce a brand-new group of characters introduced as the Sparrow Academy. The ending of season two set up the Sparrow Academy as rivals to the Umbrella Academy, so it will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

Season three of “Umbrella Academy” hits Netflix on June 22.
