Arrests, millions recovered in JPS anti-electricity theft operations

The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) is reporting that it has adjusted the bills of customers in Kingston and St. Andrew where irregularities discovered to about $9,800,000.

JPS says the discoveries were made during a series of operations targeting electricity theft yesterday.

The company says preliminary estimates reveal that over a thousand throw-ups were removed from its network.

It notes that a significant find was discovered in St. Andrew North where an entire small plaza was being powered by illegal connections.

One arrest was made.

JPS says a number of irregularities were discovered in a combination of residences and businesses across the Corporate Area.

The company says similar instances were discovered during other operations in other parishes yesterday.

In St. Catherine:

*Two upscale residences were found using meter bypasses to power appliances such as air conditioners and other high energy consumption items.

In St. Mary:

*An irregularity was discovered when a customer, who had been disconnected since last year, had an illegal connection run underground to supply the household.

In the South-West end of the island:

* 48 meter irregularities were discovered – 2 in St James, 17 in Westmoreland, and 29 in Clarendon.

* One arrest was made.

JPS is reminding persons that the company is now using multiple methods, including sophisticated technology, to unearth instances of electricity theft.
